About

EMPOWERING MALESĀ  OF COLOR IN DCPS IS AN ALIGNED EFFORT BY THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO IDENTIFY AND ASSESS CURRENT CHALLENGES AND SUCCESSES OF PK- 12 BLACK AND LATINO MALES. DCPS WILL COLLABORATE WITH THE COMMUNITY, AS WELL AS SCHOOL & DISTRICT LEADERS TO IMPLEMENT EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE, INCREASE ACHIEVEMENT, AND PREPARE OUR MALES OF COLOR FOR COLLEGE, CAREERS, AND LIFE BEYOND DCPS.

OUR PLAN

Our goal at the District of Columbia Public Schools is to ensure every DCPS student receives a world-class education that prepares ALL of our students, regardless of background or circumstances, for success in college, career, and life.

To fulfill this goal, we realized that we must do a better job of tapping into the potential of male students of color in our schools.

Here’s how we’re going to do it. We’ll:
-Identify academic challenges associated with males of color in DCPS.
-Analyze the success stories and dig into what worked for males of color who have excelled.
-Highlight and replicate what’s already working on a national level and in other communities.
-Align our current programs and resources in support of our males of color.
-Work to improve academic outcomes and social/emotional development of these students.
-Collaborate with other agencies and the community to make this a sustained effort.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to ensure that every DCPS school provides a world class education that prepares ALL of our students-including males of color-for success in college, career and life.

On January 21, 2015, DCPS announced this new initiative at Ballou Senior High School featuring speakers Mayor Muriel Bowser and Urban Prep Founder Tim King (video left).
